A WAKE-UP CALL! ENSURE THE RIGHT OF EVERY CHILD TO A
SAFE SCHOOL.
CONTAMINATED CLASSROOMS: When Learning Becomes Lethal is
a medically endorsed workshop designed to help you recognize and
remedy the environmental health hazards in your school. It will
educate and empower you to:
- Understand the direct implication of poor indoor air quality (IAQ)
in a school on the health and academic performance of the students
and teachers.
- Recognize the characteristics of Environmental Illness (EI) and
the Sick School Syndrome.
- Appreciate the unique vulnerability of children to environmental
exposures.
- Decipher IAQ regulations and guidelines.
- Interpret IAQ testing results.
- Conduct a preliminary on-site environmental assessment without
elaborate equipment.
- Comprehend the specific health hazards associated with the use of
pesticides, carpeting, formaldehyde, and harsh cleaning products
in schools.
- Implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles, policies,
and practices.
- Adopt the concepts of Source Control and the Precautionary
Principles.
- Model the pioneering work of some farsighted school districts.
- Empower parents and teachers to facilitate change and to advocate
for accommodations for children.
"The mind is the human's most precious possession and
collectively society's greatest resource. Threats of its destruction,
erosion or deterioration should be considered emergencies."
(Kay Kilburn, Archives of Environmental Health, May/June 1993)
